Is the University of Michigan or Columbia better for journalism?

The biggest practical tradeoff is undergraduate access versus prestige at the graduate-professional level. Michigan offers a clear undergraduate path through the Department of Journalism, with campus media, reporting classes, and a large public university ecosystem that makes it easier to start doing journalism early. Columbia has one of the most famous journalism brands in the country, but that reputation is centered much more on the graduate School of Journalism than on a dedicated undergraduate journalism major.

For a high school student who wants to study journalism as an undergraduate, Michigan is usually the more straightforward option. You can major in journalism there, build clips through student publications and broadcasting, and benefit from a campus that supports a wide range of beats, from politics and sports to arts and investigative work. Ann Arbor also gives you a classic college environment with a huge student community and lots of extracurricular depth.

At Columbia, undergrads can absolutely prepare for journalism, but the path is less direct. Students often major in subjects like political science, English, history, or sociology while writing for major campus publications and taking selected journalism-related courses. Being in New York City is a real advantage for internships, networking, and exposure to major media organizations, but the undergraduate experience is not built around a journalism major in the same way Michigan’s is.

So if the question is which school is better specifically for undergraduate journalism, Michigan has the clearer edge. If the question is which school carries the more iconic journalism name overall, Columbia does.
