Which has stronger engineering prestige, Clemson or Michigan?

Michigan has the stronger engineering prestige overall. Its College of Engineering has a broader national and international reputation, very deep research strength, and especially strong name recognition across major engineering employers. In most engineering circles, a Michigan degree carries more immediate weight simply because the program is viewed as one of the established top public engineering schools.

One big differentiator is visibility across disciplines. Michigan is highly regarded not just in one or two areas, but across mechanical, electrical, computer, aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, and more. That matters for prestige because employers and graduate programs tend to see Michigan as a place with elite-level engineering infrastructure at scale, while Clemson is respected but not usually placed in that same tier across the board.

Another difference is research reputation. Michigan has a much larger engineering research footprint, more nationally known faculty, and stronger connections to major labs, industry partners, and graduate programs. Even if you are focused on undergrad outcomes rather than research itself, that research stature affects how the school is perceived in the field and how widely its engineering brand travels.

Clemson still has a solid engineering reputation, especially in the Southeast and in areas tied to its industry partnerships, including automotive and manufacturing. Employers absolutely know Clemson, and it can be an excellent engineering choice. But in a straight prestige comparison, especially beyond its strongest regional networks, Michigan is the name that is more consistently seen as higher-status in engineering.
