UMass Amherst vs Ohio State for marketing: which is better for an undergraduate major?

The biggest practical tradeoff is business-school scale and recruiting reach versus a somewhat more personal-feeling flagship experience. Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business tends to have broader national name recognition in business circles and a very large employer network, while UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management is also well respected and has a strong reputation, especially in the Northeast. For marketing specifically, both can get you to solid outcomes, but Ohio State usually has the edge in visibility, alumni reach, and access to large-company recruiting.

Ohio State is often the school people think of first when comparing the two for undergraduate business. Fisher is one of the more established public undergraduate business programs, and being in Columbus helps with internships during the school year because it is a major metro area with a lot of corporate presence. That matters for marketing, where internships, project work, and networking often shape job options as much as the major itself.

UMass Amherst is not a weak option at all. Isenberg has built a strong brand, and students often speak highly of the program’s organization and career focus. If you expect to work in New England or the Boston area after graduation, UMass can be especially attractive because its regional network is meaningful and the school is well known there.

If the question is which one is more highly regarded overall for an undergraduate marketing student, I would give Ohio State a slight but real advantage. It is the safer pick if you want the broader national business reputation and larger recruiting ecosystem. UMass Amherst remains a very credible choice, especially if cost is better or you want stronger geographic ties to the Northeast.
