Is the University of Michigan or Ohio State better for internships?

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth of national recruiting versus size and accessibility of a huge in-state employer network. Michigan tends to draw broader national attention from employers across consulting, finance, tech, engineering, and research, while Ohio State offers a very large recruiting ecosystem tied to Columbus, major Ohio companies, and one of the biggest alumni networks in the country. For internships specifically, both can work very well, but Michigan usually has a slight edge in prestige-driven recruiting and Ohio State often feels a bit more straightforward for students plugging into a large regional market.

At Michigan, Ann Arbor is packed with research, startups, and employer presence, and the university has especially strong pipelines through Ross, engineering, computer science, and pre-professional programs. Employers that recruit selectively often make Michigan a regular stop, so students aiming at highly competitive internships may benefit from that visibility. The school’s name also tends to travel very well outside the Midwest, which matters if you want internships in places like New York, Chicago, Seattle, or the Bay Area.

Ohio State’s advantage is scale. Columbus is a fast-growing city with a strong business base, and OSU has extensive career fairs, corporate partnerships, and a very broad alumni footprint. That can translate into a lot of internship options, especially in business, logistics, healthcare, public policy, engineering, and roles connected to large regional employers. For many students, there are simply a lot of doors to knock on, and the city itself provides more immediate local opportunity than many college towns.

If the question is purely which school tends to offer the stronger internship platform overall, I’d give Michigan the nod because of its employer brand and reach across competitive industries. I’d lean Ohio State only if cost is meaningfully lower or if you expect to build your career mainly in Columbus or the broader Ohio market, where its network is especially powerful.
