Loyola Marymount vs Wake Forest for communications: which is better for internships and career prep?

I’m trying to narrow down colleges for communications and these two keep coming up for me. Loyola Marymount and Wake Forest both seem strong, but I’m mostly wondering which one gives students better access to internships, alumni connections, and job opportunities after graduation.

I’m not just looking at the major itself. I want to know which school tends to be stronger for helping communications students build a real path into the field.

For communications with a strong eye on internships and career prep, Loyola Marymount usually has the clearer built-in advantage. Its Los Angeles location matters a lot for communications because students are close to entertainment, media, advertising, public relations, digital content, and brand strategy employers during the school year, not just over the summer.

LMU tends to fit the student who wants frequent hands-on exposure while in college. If you like the idea of interning part time during the semester, attending industry panels in a major media market, and building a resume through repeated real-world experiences, LMU is very appealing. For communications specifically, being in LA can open more day-to-day access to agencies, production companies, studios, nonprofits, startups, and corporate communications teams than you would likely get in a smaller market.

Wake Forest makes more sense for the student who wants a strong overall undergraduate experience with a loyal alumni network, even if the communications-specific internship ecosystem is less tied to one giant media hub. That can be valuable if you are interested in communications work that overlaps with business, marketing, politics, sports, or strategic communications rather than purely media-centered paths.

In practical terms, Wake may offer a more curated path, while LMU may offer a more immediate one. At Wake, students often benefit from structured mentorship and a tight-knit network. At LMU, the environment can make it easier to test different corners of communications early because the surrounding city is part of the education.

If internships during the academic year and direct proximity to communications industries are your top priorities, Loyola Marymount has the edge. If you care more about a strong alumni culture that can translate across multiple industries, Wake Forest is very compelling, but for communications career-building specifically, LMU is the one I’d lean toward.
