University of Minnesota vs USC for business: which is better for an undergraduate business degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost and access versus brand reach and private-school networking. Minnesota’s Carlson School is a very well-regarded undergraduate business program with strong recruiting in the Midwest, while USC Marshall tends to offer broader national visibility, a powerful alumni network, and especially strong connections in Los Angeles and the West Coast. Both can lead to excellent outcomes, but they do not carry the same reach in every region or industry.

For undergraduate business reputation alone, USC usually has the stronger overall national brand. Marshall is widely recognized by employers across finance, consulting, entrepreneurship, entertainment business, and tech-adjacent fields, and USC’s alumni network is one of the school’s biggest real advantages. That network can matter a lot for internships and first jobs, especially in Southern California.

Minnesota is not a weak option at all. Carlson has a strong reputation, especially in accounting, supply chain, management information systems, and corporate recruiting tied to major Minneapolis-St. Paul employers. If you want to work in the Twin Cities or broader Midwest, Carlson can be an especially smart choice because the local employer pipeline is excellent and the degree is respected.

The other big factor is value. If Minnesota would be meaningfully cheaper, that can outweigh some of USC’s prestige advantage for undergrad business, especially if you are disciplined about internships and recruiting. Business is a field where school name helps, but debt and location also matter a lot.

If the question is strictly which school has the stronger overall business reputation and wider post-grad network, USC has the edge. If Minnesota comes in at a much lower cost and you are open to building your career in the Midwest, Carlson is a very credible alternative and can be the better decision in practice.
