Is Wellesley or WashU better for biology as an undergraduate?

I’m comparing Wellesley and WashU and trying to figure out which would be the stronger choice if I want to study biology in college.

I’m mostly interested in the overall undergrad experience for a bio major, including classes, research access, and preparation for future science paths.

The biggest practical tradeoff is small, women’s liberal arts biology with very close faculty access at Wellesley versus a larger research-university biology environment with more built-in scale and lab infrastructure at WashU. For biology specifically, WashU benefits from being tightly connected to a major medical school and major research enterprise, which usually means more labs, more subfields, and more advanced upper-level options. Wellesley, though, gives undergraduates unusually direct access to professors, strong teaching, and cross-registration opportunities through its broader academic network.

For classes, Wellesley tends to feel more personal. Intro and upper-level courses are typically taught with a stronger emphasis on discussion, mentoring, and close relationships with faculty, and that can matter a lot if you learn best in smaller settings. WashU offers a wider research-university menu in biology and related sciences, so students often have more options within areas like molecular biology, neuroscience, genetics, and pre-health coursework.

For research access, WashU has the edge on sheer volume and variety. Its proximity to major biomedical research means there are many more labs and investigators, and undergrads interested in medicine, biotech, or lab research often find that ecosystem especially useful. Wellesley still does very well here, especially because undergrads are not competing with graduate students in the same way at a liberal arts college, and students can also tap into nearby opportunities through collaborations and consortium relationships.

For preparation after college, both can lead well to PhD, MD, and other science paths, but they do it differently. Wellesley is excellent for students who want strong advising, confidence-building in STEM, and faculty who really know them. WashU is often the stronger platform if you want immediate immersion in a high-powered biomedical setting and expect to take advantage of extensive research early.

If the question is which is better for biology in the broadest undergraduate sense, I’d give WashU the advantage because of the depth of biology resources and research environment. I’d lean toward Wellesley instead only if you know you want a smaller, more intimate undergraduate experience and that kind of teaching-centered setting will help you thrive.
