Michigan State vs. Miami University for accounting: which is the better choice?

I’m trying to decide between Michigan State and Miami University and I want to study accounting. Both seem like solid schools, but I’m not sure which one would be the better overall choice for an accounting major.

I’m mostly thinking about the strength of the program, internship opportunities, and how well the degree would set me up for a CPA or first job after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and recruiting reach versus a smaller, more contained undergraduate environment. Michigan State gives you a larger business school, a broader alumni network, and stronger name recognition across more regions, while Miami University often feels more personal and undergraduate-focused, which some students prefer for advising and classroom experience.

For accounting specifically, Michigan State tends to have the edge in overall recruiting depth. The Broad College of Business is very well known, and MSU’s size usually translates into more employer activity, more alumni in major firms and corporations, and a wider set of internship pathways. That can matter if you want flexibility between public accounting, corporate accounting, audit, tax, or potentially moving into finance-related roles.

Miami University is still a credible option for accounting and places students well, especially in the Midwest. Its Farmer School of Business has a strong reputation for undergraduate business education, and some students benefit from the more intimate setting. But in a head-to-head comparison, Michigan State usually offers the stronger platform if you are prioritizing volume of recruiting opportunities and broader brand reach after graduation.

For CPA preparation, both schools can get you there, but the school itself is only part of the picture. You will still need to plan your credits carefully and use internships well. Where Michigan State helps is that its larger accounting ecosystem can make it easier to find mentors, firms, student organizations, and recruiting channels tied to CPA-track careers.

My pick would be Michigan State for accounting, especially if cost is reasonably close. Miami becomes more compelling if you know you want a smaller campus feel and you strongly prefer that style of undergraduate experience, but on program strength, internship access, and first-job setup, Michigan State has the clearer advantage.
