Is the University of Hawaii or Brown more fun for college life?

I’m trying to get a feel for what day-to-day life is like at each school, not just academics. I know “fun” can mean different things, but I’m mostly thinking about social life, campus vibe, and whether students seem happy outside of class.

I’m a current high school student trying to figure out which kind of environment I’d enjoy more in college.

Brown and the University of Hawaiʻi can both be fun, but they offer very different versions of college life. Brown tends to suit students who want an active residential campus with a lot happening through clubs, student traditions, arts, and friend groups centered around campus in Providence. UH is more appealing for students who want their college experience to blend into the lifestyle of Honolulu, with beach access, outdoor culture, and a less enclosed, more city-connected feel.

At Brown, day-to-day life often feels very student-driven. The open curriculum attracts independent, curious people, and that carries into social life too: students often build their own communities through performances, publications, cultural groups, activism, and smaller gatherings rather than one dominant party scene. People often describe Brown as intense academically but also collaborative and expressive, with a campus culture where students are busy, interesting, and usually quite engaged outside class.

UH fits a different kind of student happiness. If your idea of fun includes warm weather year-round, surfing or hiking on weekends, spending time off campus, and being in a diverse public university environment, UH has real appeal. The social atmosphere can feel more spread out, partly because it is a public university in a major city and not as concentrated around a single residential campus identity. For some students that feels freeing and relaxed; for others it can feel less immersive.

Brown is often the stronger match for someone who wants a classic private-college social ecosystem where campus life itself is the center of things. UH makes more sense for someone who cares less about a tight campus bubble and more about location, outdoors, and a lifestyle that extends beyond school grounds.
