University of Hawaii or Boston University for internships: which is better?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and internships are a big factor for me. I know the location and alumni network can matter a lot, and I’m trying to understand which school generally gives students better internship opportunities and access to employers.

The biggest practical tradeoff is access: Boston University puts you in the middle of a dense internship market during the school year, while the University of Hawai‘i offers a more limited local market but can be excellent for students targeting Hawai‘i, Asia-Pacific, marine, tourism, public service, or island-based industries. For sheer volume and variety of employers, BU has the stronger day-to-day advantage because Boston has major hospitals, startups, finance firms, media organizations, nonprofits, and research institutions all within reach. BU also benefits from a very large alumni base and a campus culture where in-semester internships are common because students can commute to employers without leaving school.

At UH, internship access depends more on your field and how intentional you are. If your interests line up with areas where Hawai‘i has real strengths, such as environmental science, oceanography, hospitality, education, government, indigenous studies, or Pacific-region policy, UH can connect you to meaningful opportunities that are hard to replicate elsewhere. But if you want broad access to national employers across many industries, the local market is smaller and you may need to rely more on summer internships, remote roles, or mainland recruiting.

Another difference is employer visibility. BU students are more likely to have companies actively recruiting nearby, attending fairs, hosting events, and offering part-time internships during the semester. That matters because frequency and convenience often turn into more applications, more interviews, and more resume-building before senior year.

So for internships in the broadest sense, Boston University is the better bet. University of Hawai‘i makes the most sense when your goals are tied to Hawai‘i or a niche field where the location itself is an asset, but BU usually offers deeper employer access and a wider internship pipeline.
