Arizona State vs Columbia for city life: which feels more urban for a college student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Columbia puts you inside a dense, transit-heavy city where student life blends into New York every day, while ASU Tempe gives you a lively college-town environment inside the larger Phoenix metro, but not the same constant urban intensity. For walkability, public transit, and the feeling that the city starts the moment you leave campus, Columbia is clearly more urban. ASU has plenty to do nearby, especially around Tempe, but it feels more spread out and more car-oriented overall.

At Columbia, you are in Manhattan with immediate subway access, dense streets, restaurants, museums, internships, neighborhoods, and city activity built into daily life. Even though Columbia’s campus has a defined boundary, you step out into Morningside Heights and can move around the city easily without needing a car. That matters a lot if your idea of college includes casually taking transit to events, exploring different neighborhoods, and feeling plugged into a major city every week.

ASU’s Tempe campus is active and social, and Mill Avenue gives students shops, food, nightlife, and a strong off-campus scene close by. Tempe is more walkable than many people expect, and the Valley Metro light rail helps with movement to some nearby areas. But the broader Phoenix area is still much more spread out than New York, and day-to-day life often feels less dense, less transit-centered, and less urban in the classic sense.

For a real city feel during college, Columbia is the more convincing answer. ASU can offer a fun, energetic student environment with access to a major metro area, but Columbia feels like actually living in a city, not just attending a university near one.
