Arizona State vs UCLA for a communications major: which is the better choice?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list, and I’m interested in studying communications. I keep seeing Arizona State and UCLA come up, but I’m not sure how to compare them in a way that actually matters for this major.

I’m mostly trying to figure out which school would be the stronger overall choice for a communications student.

The biggest practical tradeoff is access versus prestige: Arizona State often gives communications students more room to get involved early and build hands-on experience, while UCLA brings a stronger national brand and direct proximity to major media and entertainment networks in Los Angeles. For communications specifically, both schools can work well, but they offer different kinds of advantages. ASU is known for being career-oriented and expansive, while UCLA tends to carry more weight on name recognition and employer perception.

At UCLA, the location matters a lot for this major. Being in Los Angeles can make internships, networking, guest speakers, and media-related opportunities easier to find during the school year, especially if your interests lean toward entertainment, digital media, public relations, journalism-adjacent work, or brand strategy. UCLA also tends to offer a stronger academic reputation overall, which can help when you are applying for competitive internships or early jobs.

Arizona State has real strengths too, especially if you want a program that feels more accessible and professionally focused from the start. ASU has a large ecosystem with plenty of student media, communications-related campus roles, and internship pipelines, and some students benefit from the scale because there are simply many ways to get involved. In a field like communications, that matters, since your portfolio, experience, and network often matter as much as the diploma itself.

Cost should be a serious factor here. Communications is not a major where taking on dramatically more debt automatically pays off, so if ASU is substantially cheaper for you, that can make it the smarter decision in real life. But if cost is similar, UCLA would usually be the stronger overall pick because of its reputation, location, and the breadth of opportunities tied to the LA market.

So the answer is UCLA if finances are reasonably manageable. ASU becomes very compelling if it is meaningfully more affordable or if you want a bigger, more flexible environment where it may be easier to jump into experience early.
