Arizona State vs RPI for tech recruiting: which is better for software jobs?

For software recruiting specifically, Arizona State has the edge for breadth of opportunities, while RPI has a solid but narrower pipeline that tends to be strongest in engineering-heavy and Northeast-focused circles.

ASU’s biggest differentiator is employer access. Phoenix has grown into a serious tech market, with large semiconductor, cloud, defense, and enterprise software presence. For software jobs, that matters because recruiting is partly a numbers game.

RPI’s advantage is that it carries a more concentrated technical brand among certain employers, especially those that know engineering schools well. In some Northeast and legacy engineering recruiting channels, RPI can punch above its size, and students often benefit from being in a smaller, more technically focused environment. That can help if you want peers who are deeply engineering-oriented and a campus culture that feels more centered on STEM than on a huge public-university experience.

The reason I’d still lean ASU for software is that software recruiting today is not just about prestige with a subset of employers. It is about access to many employers, repeated interview chances, internships during the year, and proximity to a growing tech region. If your goal is maximizing general software internship and job opportunities across a wide range of companies, ASU is likely to give you the broader runway. RPI is still very credible, but its recruiting advantage is less universal than people sometimes assume.
