For students aiming at master’s or PhD programs, those factors usually matter more than name alone. Colby can still be excellent preparation, especially if you want a small liberal arts environment with close faculty attention.

One concrete difference is research infrastructure. Tufts has graduate programs of its own, more lab and research activity tied to a university setting, and easier access to nearby academic and medical institutions. That can translate into more chances to build the kind of sustained research record, recommendations, and specialized experience that graduate admissions committees value.

Another differentiator is academic breadth and advising for pre-grad paths. Tufts offers more departments, more advanced coursework in some fields, and more opportunities to work with faculty whose work is already connected to graduate-level networks. Colby’s advising can be very personal, but at Tufts there is often more built-in exposure to seminars, research groups, and interdisciplinary work that mirrors graduate study.
