That matters for pre-med students who need strong grades, detailed recommendation letters, and meaningful clinical or research experiences. Its class environment is often described as more personal, which can make a real difference when you are trying to stand out over four years.

One key differentiator is scale. William & Mary is much smaller than UC Irvine, and that usually means less anonymity in intro science sequences and more direct faculty interaction. For a pre-med student, that can help with office hours, mentoring, research connections, and committee or advisor support when it is time to apply to medical school.

Another difference is the surrounding academic ecosystem.
