William & Mary is known for smaller classes, closer faculty access, and an undergraduate-centered feel that can make it easier to build mentoring relationships early. UC San Diego has exceptional biology depth, major research infrastructure, and direct proximity to hospitals, biotech, and medical research, but it can feel larger and more competitive.

William & Mary tends to fit the student who wants professors to know them, wants discussion-based classes sooner, and values a campus culture where undergrads are a clear priority. For pre-med, that matters because recommendation letters, advising relationships, and sustained lab involvement often come more easily when faculty access is built into the school’s scale. If you learn best in a more personal academic setting and want less bureaucracy in finding your footing, that is a real advantage.
