For finance careers, is William & Mary or Washington University in St. Louis the better college choice?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both of these schools seem strong in different ways. I’m interested in finance and want a college that would give me the best mix of recruiting, alumni network, and opportunities for internships or jobs after graduation.
Since I know both schools are respected, I’m mainly trying to figure out which one has the stronger overall path into finance careers.

For finance, Washington University in St. Louis usually offers the stronger overall path, especially if you are aiming at high-paying private sector roles like investment banking, asset management, or competitive finance internships. William & Mary is still a respected option, but its advantages show up more clearly for students who want a smaller, more regional pipeline and are comfortable building momentum through East Coast networks.
WashU makes the most sense for the student who wants a campus environment where business is a central academic lane, where finance clubs and preprofessional preparation are highly developed, and where classmates are also targeting selective corporate paths. That kind of ecosystem matters because peer culture, alumni responsiveness, and internship prep often shape outcomes as much as classroom quality.
William & Mary fits the student who values a more traditional liberal arts atmosphere and wants strong placement potential without needing an undergraduate business school. It can work especially well for someone interested in economics, public policy, consulting-adjacent work, or finance paths where relationship-building and initiative matter more than plugging into a large on-campus recruiting machine.
One practical difference is how much structure you want. At WashU, the finance route is likely to feel more straightforward and institutionally supported. At William & Mary, successful finance outcomes are very possible, but you may need to be more proactive about networking, targeting internships early, and using alumni connections strategically.
So if the question is which school has the stronger overall finance pipeline, I’d give the edge to WashU. William & Mary remains a very good choice for the right student, but WashU is more likely to provide the combination of recruiting depth, business-oriented infrastructure, and national finance access you’re asking about.
