How much does it cost to attend UMass Dartmouth?
I'm a high school junior from Connecticut and I'm trying to figure out if UMass Dartmouth would be affordable for my family. The cost of college has me pretty stressed, and I want to start planning early so there are no surprises next year.
Does anyone know what the current tuition and fees are for out-of-state students? If you've looked into it recently or go there now, how much do you end up paying in total, including housing, meal plans, etc? Also, do you feel like it's worth the cost based on your experience so far?
I'd really appreciate any info or breakdowns, especially if you're also from out-of-state. Thanks!

UMass Dartmouth posts updated costs each year, and for the 2023-2024 academic year, out-of-state undergraduate students pay about $31,000 in tuition and mandatory fees. Housing and meals are additional — if you live on campus and have a standard meal plan, you’ll likely pay around $13,000-$15,000 per year for room and board. This brings the total estimated cost for an out-of-state student living on campus to approximately $44,000-$46,000 annually before any financial aid.
Other expenses like books, supplies, personal expenses, and transportation are usually estimated at $2,000-$3,000 a year, so it’s smart to budget for those as well. You can find a more detailed estimate on the UMass Dartmouth website (they keep an updated Cost of Attendance page), but here’s a quick breakdown:
- Tuition and fees: ~$31,000
- Room and board: ~$13,000-$15,000
- Books and personal: ~$2,000-$3,000
Some people save on costs by living off-campus or having less expensive meal plans, but most first-year students live on campus. Financial aid and merit scholarships can help a lot, especially if you have strong grades or unique talents. Last year, I knew a student from New Jersey who ended up paying closer to $22,000 after scholarships, so your actual cost could be much lower depending on your situation. It’s a good idea to check out the Net Price Calculator on their website — it gives you a sense of what you might actually pay after aid.
The value of UMass Dartmouth really depends on what you’re looking for. It’s known for programs like engineering, nursing, and business. Most students I know appreciate the supportive professors and the option for internships in the Boston/Providence area, which adds a lot of value professionally. Some people say the campus facilities could use updates, but others are happy with the community and opportunities available.
If you’re worried about affordability, applying for financial aid (FAFSA + state grants) and merit scholarships is important. Starting these conversations now will help you and your family prepare. If you have a specific major in mind, it’s worth emailing the department or admissions to ask if any departmental scholarships exist. Good luck with your search and planning!
