Is Lehigh University or Boston University better for city life and an urban college experience?

Boston University is the clearer choice for city life and an urban college experience. BU sits right in Boston along Commonwealth Avenue, with the MBTA Green Line running beside campus, so restaurants, neighborhoods, museums, sports, and internships are part of everyday student life rather than a separate trip. Lehigh, by contrast, is in Bethlehem, which has things to do, but it does not offer the same scale, transit access, or big-city integration.

One major difference is how the campus connects to the surrounding area. BU is woven into the city instead of set apart from it, so walking off campus often means you are already in a busy urban environment with cafes, stores, apartments, and public spaces around you. Lehigh has more of a traditional campus feel on South Mountain, and even though Bethlehem has a downtown and nearby entertainment, the school feels more self-contained and less immersed in a major city.

Public transit is another big separator. At BU, students can use Boston’s transit system to get to internships, other neighborhoods, Logan Airport, and weekend plans without needing a car. That matters a lot if you want spontaneity and independence. Lehigh students usually rely more on campus resources, rides, or driving to reach a wider range of off-campus options.

The internship and professional environment also leans strongly toward BU for an urban experience. Being in Boston puts students near hospitals, startups, finance firms, media organizations, nonprofits, and major employers during the school year. Lehigh can still offer strong opportunities, especially through alumni and regional connections, but it does not surround you with the same constant city energy or volume of nearby options.
