Which is better for economics, Bowdoin or UC Berkeley?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and I’m interested in studying economics. Bowdoin and UC Berkeley both seem strong, but they’re very different schools.
I’m mostly wondering which one is generally better if I want a strong economics education and good opportunities after graduation.

UC Berkeley has the edge for economics. Its economics department is one of the most established and visible in the country, the course selection is much broader, and Berkeley’s location creates unusually strong access to research, policy, tech, and finance opportunities during the school year.
One major difference is scale within the major itself. At Berkeley, you will find far more upper-level economics electives, more faculty working across subfields like econometrics, development, labor, public economics, and theory, and a larger ecosystem around adjacent fields such as statistics, data science, business, and public policy. That matters if you want flexibility or expect your interests to shift once you start taking classes.
Another concrete advantage is professional access. Berkeley students can tap into the Bay Area for internships and networking in economic consulting, fintech, government, startups, and research organizations while still in school. For students aiming at graduate study, Berkeley also has a strong research culture and more pathways into large-scale empirical work.
Bowdoin still offers real strengths, especially if you value small classes, close faculty relationships, and an undergraduate-focused environment. In many classes, you are likely to get more direct professor attention earlier, and that can be excellent preparation for writing-intensive work, honors research, and recommendation letters.
The tradeoff is that Bowdoin’s economics opportunities are excellent for a liberal arts college but naturally narrower than Berkeley’s because the department and surrounding academic ecosystem are smaller. Berkeley is the clearer answer.
