Arizona State is usually the more fun pick if you want nonstop variety, bigger-scale social options, and a campus atmosphere tied closely to a major metro area. ASU in Tempe has a very active party and student event scene, and easy access to Phoenix for concerts, pro sports, restaurants, and off-campus nightlife. South Carolina is lively too, but the energy is more centered on a traditional SEC college-town experience than on sheer range of things to do.

One big difference is the surrounding environment. ASU sits in Tempe, with Mill Avenue right next to campus and the broader Phoenix area close by, so weekends can include bars, music venues, festivals, hiking, and city events without feeling stuck in one campus bubble. South Carolina has plenty happening in Columbia, especially around Five Points and game weekends, but it feels smaller and more self-contained.

Sports culture is the clearest point in South Carolina’s favor. Gamecock football creates a classic major-school atmosphere, and SEC school spirit tends to be intense, visible, and woven into campus social life. ASU has major sports and strong school pride too, but South Carolina often feels more unified around athletics in the way many students picture when they think of a high-energy college weekend.

The social scene itself also has a different flavor. ASU tends to feel broader and more varied because of its size and location, with lots of different friend groups, event types, and off-campus options. South Carolina can feel tighter-knit and more tradition-driven, which some students find more fun because it is easier to plug into familiar campus rituals and a strong shared identity.

Weather matters more than people expect. ASU’s warm climate makes it easier to be out and about for much of the year, though the extreme heat can be brutal early in the fall. South Carolina gives you more of the classic seasonal football-weather vibe, but it is also hot and humid for a good chunk of the school year.
