Bucknell vs Notre Dame for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and alumni network?

I’m trying to choose between Bucknell and Notre Dame and I’m mostly interested in finance careers after college. I know both have decent reputations, but I’m having a hard time figuring out which one tends to be stronger for getting into banking, investment management, or other finance roles.

I’m especially wondering which school has the better recruiting access and alumni network for finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is reach versus intimacy: Notre Dame gives you a broader, more nationally powerful alumni and recruiting footprint, while Bucknell can offer a smaller, tighter environment where strong students often get very personal support into finance. For banking, investment management, and high-prestige finance roles, Notre Dame usually has the edge because its name travels more widely across major markets and its alumni base is exceptionally active. Bucknell is still well respected, especially in the Northeast and among certain employers, but its pipeline is narrower.

On recruiting access, Notre Dame tends to be stronger across more cities and more finance segments. It has deeper visibility with firms in Chicago, New York, and other major hubs, and students benefit from a large business-oriented alumni community that is known for responsiveness. That matters not just for formal on-campus recruiting, but also for informational calls, referrals, and help landing internships early.

Bucknell can absolutely place students into finance, especially if you perform well and network aggressively. In some ways, its smaller size can work in your favor because standout students are easier to notice, and alumni from smaller target or semi-target schools can be especially loyal. But compared with Notre Dame, the employer list is usually less expansive and the national pull is not as strong.

For investment banking specifically, Notre Dame is the safer platform. For investment management and broader finance roles, the same pattern usually holds: both can work, but Notre Dame gives you more shots on goal and a larger alumni web to tap into over time. That long-term network matters even after the first job, especially if you may change firms or move markets.

If finance recruiting and alumni network are the core criteria, I’d take Notre Dame over Bucknell. Bucknell is a credible path, but Notre Dame offers the stronger combination of brand reach, alumni engagement, and recruiting depth for finance careers.
