Howard University or University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for computer science: which is better overall?

I’m a high school student trying to compare these two schools for computer science and I keep seeing different opinions. I know they both have strong reputations, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is generally better for CS overall.

I’m mostly looking for a clear comparison of the programs and how they’re viewed for computer science.

UIUC is the stronger choice overall for computer science. Its CS program has a much bigger national and industry reputation, a deeper set of advanced electives and research labs, and far more direct recruiting from major tech employers.

One major difference is the scale and depth of the program itself. At UIUC, computer science is one of the university’s flagship areas, with extensive course offerings across systems, AI, machine learning, theory, graphics, security, data, and hardware-adjacent computing. That usually means more specialized classes, more faculty doing high-profile research, and more chances to plug into large technical projects while you are still an undergrad.

Another differentiator is employer perception and recruiting. UIUC is very well known in tech circles, and companies that hire heavily for software engineering, quantitative roles, and research-oriented internships pay close attention to its CS students. The alumni network in computing is also especially strong, which matters for internships, referrals, and early-career placement.

Howard still has real strengths, especially its community, smaller-feeling environment, and the opportunities that come with being at a leading HBCU in Washington, DC. For some students, that translates into strong mentorship, leadership opportunities, and a supportive network that can be harder to find at a very large public university. But if the question is which school is viewed as stronger specifically for computer science as a field, UIUC has the clearer edge.
