How much harder is it to get into Williams compared with Amherst for undergraduate admissions?

There is not a big practical admissions gap between Williams and Amherst. Both are among the most selective liberal arts colleges in the country, both get very strong applicant pools, and for most students the odds feel essentially similar. If one looks slightly tougher in a given cycle, the difference is usually too small and too year-dependent to treat as meaningful for building a college list.

One reason they get grouped together is that they attract almost the same kind of applicant: top grades in rigorous courses, strong writing and recommendations, and clear intellectual engagement outside the classroom. A student who is competitive at one is very often competitive at the other, and a student who is a reach at one should usually treat the other as a reach too.

Their admissions processes also have a lot in common. Both use highly holistic review at a very selective level, so small differences in admit rate from year to year can reflect applicant volume, institutional priorities, and early application patterns more than any stable difference in difficulty. That means it is not very useful to think of Williams as a whole tier harder, or Amherst as noticeably easier.

For list-building purposes, the most realistic approach is to treat both as ultra-reaches unless your profile is truly exceptional even within highly selective admissions. The better comparison is fit, not marginal selectivity: Williams is known for its rural setting and tutorial-style academic culture, while Amherst offers an open curriculum and access to the Five College Consortium. Those distinctions are more meaningful than trying to separate them by a tiny admissions edge.
