Does the University of Maryland or Duke offer better internship opportunities for undergraduates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and location versus concentrated prestige and alumni access. Maryland gives undergraduates a large, employer-dense corridor to tap into, especially because College Park sits so close to Washington, DC, with steady access to federal agencies, policy organizations, nonprofits, contractors, and tech employers. Duke offers a smaller undergraduate environment with very strong name recognition, tight career support, and a powerful alumni network, but its immediate local internship market is not as broad as the DC area.

For realistic in-college internship access, Maryland has a real edge if you want semester internships during the school year. Being near DC matters a lot because students can commute to part-time roles in government, public policy, consulting, research, media, and adjacent fields without needing to wait for summer. For students interested in computer science, engineering, business, or public affairs, that proximity creates a lot of practical opportunities.

Duke is excellent for internships too, especially in finance, consulting, research, healthcare, and selective national-level recruiting. Its career center, faculty connections, and alumni base can open doors that punch above the size of the local Durham market.

So in day-to-day undergraduate terms, Maryland is often easier for finding a larger volume of nearby internships during the academic year, while Duke can be more powerful for landing highly selective opportunities through brand and network. If the question is where a typical student may have the easier time finding consistent internship options while in school, I’d lean Maryland. If the question is which name may carry more weight with elite employers once you are competing for top internships, Duke has the advantage.
