Should I choose Indiana or Kansas for accounting?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Indiana gives you access to a much more established business-school pipeline for accounting, while Kansas can be a solid option if cost, location, or personal fit make it more appealing. For accounting specifically, Indiana’s Kelley School of Business has a stronger national reputation, broader recruiting reach, and a deeper alumni network in business-heavy markets. Kansas can still prepare you well, but it does not carry the same level of name recognition in accounting circles.

At Indiana, the accounting path benefits from Kelley’s structured advising, strong employer presence, and a campus culture where business recruiting is a major part of student life. That matters in accounting because internships, early networking, and access to firms often shape your first job options. Indiana is especially attractive if you may want public accounting, larger firms, or flexibility to work outside the immediate region after graduation.

Kansas has real strengths too. If you prefer a school where you may find a more manageable environment, potentially lower costs depending on your situation, or stronger ties to the Kansas and nearby regional job market, it can absolutely work. For a student who is proactive about internships, CPA planning, and faculty relationships, Kansas can still lead to a successful accounting career.

One thing I would pay close attention to is whether you want the broadest recruiting platform or a good regional platform at a better value. In accounting, school prestige is not everything, but employer access and alumni reach do make a noticeable difference, especially for your first internship and first full-time role.

If both are affordable, Indiana is the clearer choice for accounting. If Kansas is meaningfully cheaper and you are comfortable building your path with a more regional focus, then Kansas becomes much easier to justify.
