Is Indiana University or UNC harder to get into?

UNC is harder to get into in the broad sense. It is widely viewed as a much more selective public university overall, and that gap is especially noticeable for out-of-state applicants because UNC heavily prioritizes North Carolina residents. Indiana University Bloomington is selective for some programs, but as a university overall it is less difficult to enter than UNC.

For a student comparing the two, UNC fits the category of schools where even very strong applicants cannot assume admission, particularly if they live outside North Carolina. UNC’s admissions process is more constrained by state residency priorities, and that alone makes the bar feel much higher for many applicants. If you are looking at UNC Chapel Hill specifically, people usually treat it as a reach or at least a very competitive target unless your profile is clearly outstanding.

Indiana University is different. A student with solid grades, a rigorous course load, and respectable testing if submitted often has a more straightforward path to IU Bloomington than to UNC.

So in a head-to-head comparison of overall undergraduate admission difficulty, UNC is the tougher admit. IU can still be competitive and certain majors or honors pathways can raise the level of difficulty, but the baseline selectivity of UNC is notably higher.
