Indiana University vs Boston College for accounting: which is better for career preparation?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Indiana gives you a larger, more established accounting recruiting machine, while Boston College offers a smaller, more personal environment in a major business market. For accounting specifically, Indiana’s Kelley School is especially well known with employers, has very deep on-campus recruiting, and sends a high volume of students into public accounting, corporate finance, and consulting. Boston College is also respected, especially in the Northeast, but its strength is more about location and alumni connections than matching Kelley’s scale in accounting recruiting.

If your top priority is career preparation in accounting, Indiana has the edge. Kelley has a long-standing reputation in business recruiting, a very structured pipeline into Big Four and other major firms, and a large enough accounting presence that you benefit from employer familiarity year after year. That matters for internships because firms often return to the same campuses where they know they can hire many strong candidates efficiently.

Boston College can still be a very good path, particularly if you want to build your career in Boston, New York, or the broader Northeast. Being near Boston helps with term-time networking and access to internships, and BC’s alumni network is genuinely useful in that region. The tradeoff is that for accounting in particular, BC does not usually have the same across-the-board national pull or sheer recruiting volume that Kelley does.

Another thing to weigh is the student experience around recruiting. At Indiana, business recruiting is highly developed and visible, which can make the path into accounting feel clearer and more organized. At BC, you may get a somewhat smaller community and closer faculty access, but the accounting pipeline is less likely to feel as dominant a part of campus life.

For accounting education plus job opportunities afterward, I’d lean Indiana.
