Is Villanova or Rice easier to get into?

I’m trying to figure out where to focus my college list and keep seeing Villanova and Rice mentioned together as selective schools. I know both are hard to get into, but I’m wondering which one is generally considered more accessible for an average strong applicant.

Rice is harder to get into than Villanova, so Villanova is generally the more accessible option for a strong applicant. Rice is a very highly selective research university with a small undergraduate population and a national applicant pool, while Villanova is also selective but tends to be a bit less difficult overall. If you are asking purely which school is easier to enter, the answer is Villanova.

Rice tends to fit students aiming for a highly academic, research-oriented environment with strong interest in fields like engineering, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary study. Its applicant pool is packed with students who have top grades, rigorous coursework, and often unusually strong extracurricular depth, so even very qualified applicants face long odds.

Villanova often appeals to students who want a selective university with strong academics but a somewhat broader path to admission than places like Rice. It is especially attractive for students interested in business, nursing, and a campus culture shaped by a Catholic Augustinian tradition, and its admissions process, while still competitive, is not usually viewed in the same tier of difficulty as Rice.

For building a list, Rice makes more sense as a higher-reach school for most applicants. Villanova can still be a reach depending on your academics and major, but it is more realistic for an "average strong applicant" than Rice is.
