How does University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign compare to Princeton for computer science prestige?

The biggest practical tradeoff is field-specific reputation versus overall institutional brand. In computer science, UIUC is one of the most respected names in the country, with a very large, established CS program and especially strong visibility in systems, engineering, and recruiting pipelines. Princeton carries extraordinary overall prestige, and its CS department is also highly respected, but in pure CS circles UIUC is at least as well regarded and often more immediately associated with top-tier computer science.

Among employers, both schools open doors. For software engineering and technical recruiting, UIUC has a long-standing reputation as a major source of strong CS talent, partly because of the size of its program, its engineering identity, and its deep presence in tech hiring. So for computer science specifically, people in the field will usually view these two as peers or may even give UIUC the nod, while outside the field Princeton’s name is more universally recognized.
