Is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign worth the extra cost compared with Michigan State for an affordable engineering degree?

The core tradeoff is prestige and recruiting reach versus cost control. For engineering, UIUC has a stronger national reputation, deeper employer pipelines, and more name recognition across highly competitive fields like computer engineering, mechanical engineering, and aerospace. Michigan State is still a credible engineering option, but if UIUC would require significantly more debt, that price gap matters a lot because engineering outcomes are usually strong from both schools when you perform well.

UIUC’s engineering college is one of the clearest strengths of the university. It tends to draw heavier recruiting from top engineering employers, offers a very broad range of specialized majors and research options, and has a stronger brand if you may want elite grad school placement or highly competitive internships. That advantage is real, especially in fields where employer recognition and dense technical recruiting can speed up access to opportunities.

Michigan State’s value case is simpler: lower cost can easily outweigh the prestige gap. MSU has solid engineering, a large alumni network, and plenty of students go on to good jobs, especially if they build experience through internships, co-ops, design teams, and faculty connections. In engineering, what you do in college often matters more than a moderate difference in school reputation once you are not comparing against truly weak programs, and MSU is not a weak program.

The biggest question is how large the cost difference actually is. If UIUC is only modestly more expensive and your family can cover it without major strain, I would lean toward UIUC because engineering is one of the areas where its added reputation is most likely to translate into real benefits. If the gap means substantial loans or ongoing financial pressure, Michigan State is probably the smarter choice, because the return on that extra cost is not guaranteed enough to justify heavy debt for most students.

My view: UIUC is worth paying extra for engineering only when the extra cost is manageable. If affordability is the central issue, Michigan State is likely the better value overall.
