Which is more prestigious for computer science: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Purdue?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep seeing both UIUC and Purdue come up for computer science. Both seem strong, but I’m not sure how they compare in terms of overall reputation and prestige among CS employers and grad schools.

I’m mostly trying to understand which name tends to carry more weight for computer science.

For computer science specifically, UIUC tends to carry more weight than Purdue in both employer perception and graduate-school reputation. Illinois has a particularly strong national identity in CS, a long-established research presence, and is often mentioned among the top tier of CS departments. Purdue is also very respected, especially in engineering, but for pure CS name recognition, UIUC usually has the stronger signal.

That matters most for a student who wants the department name itself to open doors in software recruiting, research, or PhD-oriented environments. UIUC has unusually deep visibility in systems, AI, theory, and other core CS areas, so its reputation is broad rather than tied to just one niche. Among people who closely follow computer science, Illinois is very often treated as one of the standout public universities in the field.

Purdue still has excellent credibility, and many employers will view a strong Purdue CS student as highly competitive. For someone who wants a major research university with a big engineering culture, strong technical recruiting, and a slightly different campus environment, Purdue remains a serious option. Its overall technical brand is powerful, even if its CS prestige is usually seen as a step below Illinois.

So if your question is narrowly about which name carries more prestige for computer science, the edge goes to UIUC. If your question is about whether Purdue is still strong enough to be taken very seriously by employers and grad programs, the answer is also yes.
