Is Rutgers or Penn State harder to get into?

I'm trying to compare my college list and these two schools keep coming up a lot. I know they’re both big public universities, but I’m not sure which one is generally more selective.

I’m mostly trying to understand which school is harder to get into overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Rutgers admissions can vary a lot by campus and program, while Penn State is a more unified application but can still differ by major and starting campus. Overall, Penn State University Park is usually viewed as a bit harder to get into than Rutgers overall, but Rutgers can be just as selective, or more selective, in certain programs. At Rutgers, the New Brunswick campus is the most competitive, and schools like business, engineering, and some health-related programs can be tougher than the university-wide picture suggests.

Penn State’s main campus, University Park, tends to draw a very large applicant pool and is often the most selective Penn State option. Penn State also uses pathways like admission to a different starting campus or summer start, so an applicant might be admitted to Penn State but not necessarily to University Park for fall. That can make Penn State feel more accessible at the system level while still being tougher at its flagship campus.

So if you mean the universities as a whole, they are fairly comparable, with a slight edge in selectivity to Penn State University Park. If you mean the most competitive Rutgers campus and majors, the gap can narrow a lot, and in some cases Rutgers may be harder. For a college list, it makes more sense to compare Rutgers New Brunswick versus Penn State University Park, and in that matchup Penn State is often the tougher admit overall.
