University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs UC Berkeley for engineering prestige: which is better?

I’m trying to compare these two schools specifically for engineering prestige, especially how they are perceived by employers and in the engineering field overall.

I know both are strong, but I’m not sure which name carries more weight if I’m choosing mainly based on reputation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is broad name recognition versus engineering-specific reputation. UC Berkeley tends to carry the more instantly recognizable brand overall, especially outside engineering and outside the Midwest, while UIUC has an exceptionally strong reputation within engineering itself and is very well known by technical employers. In many engineering circles, both names are treated as top-tier, and the gap in prestige is much smaller than people assume.

If you mean pure engineering reputation, Berkeley has a slight edge nationally and internationally because its overall academic brand is so powerful and its engineering college is also elite. That said, UIUC is absolutely not a step below in the way students sometimes imagine. In areas like computer engineering, civil, electrical, mechanical, and CS-related fields, UIUC is deeply respected and regularly viewed as one of the standout engineering schools in the country.

From an employer perspective, the answer depends a bit on region and industry. Berkeley often has stronger immediate cachet on the coasts and in settings where the university’s overall prestige matters. UIUC is extremely well regarded by engineering recruiters, especially large technical employers, and its name carries real weight with people who know the field well.

So if the question is whose name is more broadly prestigious, Berkeley wins. If the question is whether Berkeley’s engineering prestige is so much better that it should automatically decide your choice, the answer is no. For engineering careers, both are prestigious enough that cost, specific major strength, recruiting access, and where you want to work after graduation are usually more important than the slight reputation difference.
