University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs UC Berkeley for STEM reputation

I’m trying to compare UIUC and UC Berkeley mainly for STEM reputation and how those names are viewed by employers and grad schools.

I know both are strong schools, but I’m not sure whether one has a clearer edge overall for STEM prestige or if it depends a lot on the specific major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth versus peak brand power. Both UIUC and UC Berkeley are elite STEM schools, but Berkeley carries a slightly stronger all-around national and international prestige signal, while UIUC is exceptionally respected in several technical fields and can be just as powerful in the right major. For employers and grad schools, the difference is usually not “strong vs not strong.” It is more often “top-tier everywhere” at Berkeley versus “top-tier with especially famous departments” at UIUC.

Berkeley has the clearer edge in overall STEM reputation. Its name tends to travel more broadly across engineering, math, physics, computer science, and the sciences, and it has especially strong visibility outside the Midwest and internationally. If someone knows little beyond school names, Berkeley often gets the faster recognition bump.

UIUC, though, is not a step down in the way many applicants assume. In engineering, computer science, math, physics, and related technical areas, UIUC is deeply respected by employers, grad faculty, and recruiters who know STEM well. In some circles, especially for CS and engineering-heavy recruiting, UIUC’s reputation is outstanding and absolutely comparable in practical value.

So yes, it does depend a lot on the major. If you are comparing something like CS, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or math-heavy technical fields, UIUC is often viewed as operating at an extremely high level, not far behind Berkeley and sometimes effectively equal in employer perception. If you mean overall STEM prestige across nearly every department, Berkeley has the broader halo.

For grad school placement, both names open doors, but research output, recommendations, GPA, and project depth will matter more than the difference between these two brands. For industry, Berkeley may have a slight universal-name advantage, while UIUC can be just as compelling to technical recruiters who hire deeply from engineering programs.

If the question is purely reputation, Berkeley has the edge overall. If the question is whether UIUC’s STEM name is strong enough to stand alongside Berkeley in serious technical fields, the answer is definitely yes.
