University of Iowa vs Fordham for finance careers: which is better for landing a finance job after college?
I’m trying to decide between the University of Iowa and Fordham, and I want to study finance. Both seem like solid options, but I keep hearing that location and alumni networks can matter a lot for getting internships and full-time jobs.
I’m mainly looking at which school would give me a better shot at starting a finance career after graduation.

For finance specifically, Fordham usually gives you the more direct runway into internships and entry-level jobs, mainly because of its New York City location and its access to firms during the school year. Being in the Bronx with strong ties into Manhattan matters a lot when recruiting is concentrated around NYC, and Fordham students can network, intern part time, and attend employer events much more easily.
Fordham tends to fit the student who wants to be plugged into recruiting early and is ready to hustle. A big part of the value is proximity: coffee chats, informational interviews, semester internships, and alumni connections are simply easier when firms are nearby.
Iowa makes more sense for the student who wants a traditional Big Ten campus experience, lower-pressure recruiting, and strong outcomes in business without needing NYC right away. The Tippie College of Business is well respected, and Iowa can absolutely place students into finance jobs, especially in corporate finance, banking, and related roles across the Midwest. Its alumni base is broad and loyal, which can be very helpful, but the path is usually more regional and may require more intentional effort if you want to break into East Coast finance.
If you already know you want finance and want the highest ceiling for finance recruiting straight out of college, Fordham is the more advantageous option. Iowa is still a solid business school, but for launching directly into finance, especially in New York, Fordham’s location and network are hard to beat.
