Is University of Iowa or ASU better for internship opportunities?

For internship access specifically, Arizona State usually gives students a wider and more immediate pipeline. Its location in the Phoenix metro puts students close to a very large job market, and ASU has strong ties to employers in business, engineering, tech, health, media, and public sector work. That matters because proximity often makes part-time internships during the semester much easier, not just summer opportunities.

ASU tends to fit students who want lots of options and are ready to be proactive in a big university setting. The scale can work in your favor: there are frequent employer events, major-specific career resources, and a broad alumni presence in the region. For a student who wants to stack internships, work during the school year, or explore several industries before committing, ASU often has more built-in volume around it.

Iowa can still be a very good place for internships, especially for students who value a more traditional campus feel and who may want a somewhat more personal academic environment. It is especially solid in areas connected to healthcare, writing, communications, public service, and some business pathways, with the University of Iowa Health Care system being a notable asset. For students in those fields, the school can offer meaningful hands-on experience and faculty support that feels easier to access.

The tradeoff is that Iowa City is a smaller market, so nearby employer variety is not as extensive as what ASU students can tap into in and around Phoenix. That does not mean Iowa students struggle to get experience, but it can mean being more intentional about summer internships, research, campus jobs, or regional networking outside the immediate area.

If your top priority is maximizing internship quantity, industry variety, and access to nearby employers during the academic year, ASU has the edge. If you are drawn to a somewhat smaller-feeling environment and your interests align with Iowa’s stronger campus-based and regional opportunities, Iowa can still serve you well.
