UC Santa Barbara vs Carnegie Mellon for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

I’m trying to decide between UCSB and Carnegie Mellon for computer science and keep going back and forth. Both seem like strong options, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally better for an undergrad CS education.

I care about things like academic strength, research opportunities, and how well the program sets students up for internships and jobs after graduation.

Carnegie Mellon has the edge for undergraduate computer science. Its School of Computer Science is one of the most established and influential CS environments in the country, the curriculum is unusually deep even at the undergraduate level, and recruiters in software, systems, AI, robotics, and quantitative tech know the program extremely well.

The biggest differentiator is academic structure. At CMU, computer science is not just one strong major inside a large university system. Employers actively recruit there for demanding software and computing roles, and the alumni network in technical industries is especially powerful. UCSB can still place students very well, particularly students who do well academically and build experience early, but CMU tends to create more direct momentum simply because of how widely its CS program is recognized.

The main reason someone might still choose UCSB is not weaker academics but overall lifestyle and cost. UCSB offers a very strong CS education in a more relaxed coastal environment, often with more flexibility and potentially much lower cost for California residents.
