Is San Diego State or McGill better for business?

McGill is usually seen as the stronger name overall for undergraduate business, especially if you care about international reputation and the academic brand of the degree. Its Desautels Faculty of Management is one of McGill’s best-known professional schools, and the McGill name tends to travel well across Canada and internationally.

McGill makes the most sense for a student who wants a more globally recognized university and access to recruiting pipelines in Montreal, Toronto, and beyond. It can be especially attractive if you may work in Canada or outside the U.S., since the degree is widely known. The tradeoff is that internships and networking can depend more on your own hustle, and some opportunities in Montreal may be easier to navigate with French, even though McGill itself is English-language.

San Diego State fits a different kind of student well: someone who wants a business education tied closely to a large U.S. public university and to Southern California career opportunities. SDSU’s Fowler College of Business has a solid reputation, particularly regionally, and its location helps with internships in San Diego and nearby markets. If you want to build your network in California and plan to work there after graduation, SDSU can be very practical because local employer recognition and alumni connections matter a lot.

So in pure reputation terms, McGill has the stronger overall business brand. In internship and job terms, the answer depends more on where you want to work afterward. McGill opens more doors by name across borders, while SDSU can be the more strategically useful option for a student targeting Southern California employers and wanting day-to-day access to that market during college.
