Both are public universities, but UCR is part of the UC system and SDSU is in the CSU system, so the tuition structure is different and the full cost can shift depending on housing and aid. For many students paying close to published costs, the gap usually comes more from room, board, and local expenses than from a dramatic academic-price difference.

Housing is one of the clearest separators. San Diego is an expensive market, and that often pushes up both on-campus and off-campus living costs around SDSU.
