Is San Diego State or Virginia Tech worth it for college?

Virginia Tech is usually the stronger investment if the price is close, especially for engineering, computer science, architecture, and other technical fields. It has a particularly strong national reputation in those areas, deep recruiting pipelines, and a campus culture built around a traditional residential college experience. San Diego State is absolutely worth it in the right situation, but it tends to make the most sense when cost, location, and specific business or communications goals line up in its favor.

One major differentiator is academic reputation by field. Virginia Tech has a broader national pull for STEM and design, and employers across the country know it well for producing career-ready graduates. That matters if you want access to bigger recruiting ecosystems, especially in engineering-heavy industries or if you may work outside California after college.

Another difference is how each school connects to jobs. San Diego State benefits a lot from its Southern California location, with strong ties to business, hospitality, media, public health, and some local tech and biotech opportunities. For students who want to build a career in San Diego or California, that regional network can be very valuable, but it is often more region-specific than Virginia Tech’s reach.

The college experience is also pretty different. Virginia Tech has a more classic campus-centered environment in Blacksburg, with strong school spirit, a cohesive student community, and a setting where campus life drives much of the experience. San Diego State offers a more urban, warm-weather lifestyle with access to the city and beaches, which can be a real plus, but some students find it less immersive academically and socially than a place like Virginia Tech.

Cost is the biggest swing factor. If you would pay significantly more for Virginia Tech, especially as an out-of-state student, San Diego State can easily be the smarter value because avoiding heavy debt matters more than a reputation bump. If costs are reasonably similar, Virginia Tech tends to deliver the stronger long-term return for a wider range of majors.
