Is the University of Minnesota or UVA harder to get into for college admissions?

I’m trying to get a better sense of how selective different colleges are as I make my list. Both schools come up a lot when people talk about strong public universities, but they seem to have pretty different reputations. I want to understand which one is generally considered more selective overall.

The biggest practical difference is that UVA is considered much more selective overall, while the University of Minnesota is more accessible for a broader range of applicants. UVA gets a heavier volume of highly qualified applicants, has a stronger national reputation for selective admissions, and is especially tough for out-of-state students. Minnesota is still a respected public research university, but in admissions terms it is not usually placed in the same selectivity tier as UVA.

If you are comparing them purely on difficulty of admission, UVA is the harder school to get into. That is true in most years and is part of how applicants typically build their college lists. UVA’s admissions process is also shaped by its public mission in Virginia, so Virginia residents usually have a clearer path than nonresidents, but even in-state admission is still quite competitive.

Minnesota, by contrast, tends to admit a wider share of strong students and is often a more realistic option for applicants whose profile may not be at the very top of the pool. It can still be competitive for certain majors or programs, but overall it is not viewed as selective in the same way UVA is.

So if your goal is to sort these two by admissions difficulty alone, put UVA in the more selective category and Minnesota in the less selective one. That makes UVA more likely to belong on the reach side of a list, while Minnesota is more often a match or possible target depending on the applicant’s academic profile.
