Is the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Cambridge more prestigious for engineering?

I’m a high school junior trying to understand how people compare engineering programs by prestige, especially when one school is in the U.S. and the other is in the U.K.

I’ve heard both names come up a lot, and I’m not sure how their reputations compare in engineering overall.

For engineering prestige alone, Cambridge has the broader global name recognition, while UIUC is one of the most respected engineering schools in the U.S. and carries especially strong weight in technical and industry circles. In other words, if someone is asking about overall institutional prestige worldwide, Cambridge usually lands higher. If they are talking specifically about engineering reputation among employers, researchers, and engineers, UIUC is absolutely in that top-tier conversation rather than being a clear step below.

Cambridge tends to fit the student who cares about worldwide academic prestige, a very theory-heavy education, and the cachet of one of the most historically renowned universities in the world. Its engineering program is highly respected, and the Cambridge name travels extremely well across countries and outside engineering too. For someone who values the brand itself as much as the program, Cambridge has the edge.

UIUC fits the student who wants to be surrounded by a huge engineering ecosystem with exceptional depth across subfields, strong recruiting, major research activity, and a reputation that is especially powerful in the U.S. engineering world. In areas like computer engineering, electrical engineering, civil, mechanical, and related technical fields, UIUC is known as a serious powerhouse. Among engineers in the U.S., nobody would see UIUC as second-rate compared with Cambridge.

So the answer depends on what kind of prestige you mean. Cambridge has the more universally recognizable name, especially to non-engineers and in international settings. UIUC has engineering-specific prestige that is enormous, particularly in the U.S., and in some practical contexts an employer or grad program in engineering may care just as much about UIUC as about Cambridge.
