UCLA has much better city access. It is embedded in Los Angeles, with Westwood as a walkable neighborhood and the rest of the city reachable by bus, rideshare, and car, so urban access is part of normal student life rather than an occasional trip. UIUC is in Champaign-Urbana, which functions much more like a self-contained college town.

At UCLA, day to day city access can mean grabbing food in Westwood, going to Santa Monica, Century City, Koreatown, downtown LA, concerts, internships, museums, or beaches without leaving the broader metro area. You are not on an isolated campus. Even though LA is spread out and traffic is real, students still live inside a major city ecosystem with far more off-campus options built into everyday life.

At UIUC, the immediate area has plenty for students in a college-town sense: restaurants, coffee shops, bars, campus events, and a bus system that makes Champaign-Urbana easy to navigate. But it does not feel like being plugged into a major city.

The practical difference is frequency. At UCLA, city life is ambient, even if some destinations take time to reach. At UIUC, the local environment is convenient and student-friendly, but major-city access is not something most students treat as routine.
