For engineering prestige, is the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Brown considered more respected by employers and grad schools?

UIUC is typically the more respected name in engineering itself. Its College of Engineering is one of the best-known in the country, it produces engineering research at a very large scale, and many employers recruit there specifically for technical roles. In engineering circles, UIUC’s brand is immediately recognizable in a way that is often stronger than Brown’s.

For employers, the biggest differentiator is recruiting depth and breadth. UIUC has a huge engineering ecosystem across fields like computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and materials science, so companies that hire engineers in volume tend to know the school well and return regularly. Brown is well regarded, but its engineering program is smaller and less central to the university’s identity, so it usually does not carry the same field-specific weight.

For grad schools, UIUC also has the edge on engineering prestige because of its research reputation, faculty visibility, and long-standing strength across multiple engineering disciplines. A strong student from either school can absolutely place well into graduate programs, but the engineering academic community is especially familiar with UIUC’s departments and research output. That matters when people are assessing preparation in a technical field.

Brown’s name is still powerful, especially in overall institutional prestige and in interdisciplinary settings. But if the question is narrowly about how engineering is viewed by engineering employers and graduate programs, UIUC is the one that usually commands more respect.
