University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs Notre Dame for finance careers
I’m trying to decide between UIUC and Notre Dame, and I’m interested in a future career in finance. I know both schools are respected, but I’m trying to understand which one tends to give students a stronger path into finance recruiting and internships.
I’m mostly looking at the overall undergrad reputation for finance careers, not a specific program brochure.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access. UIUC gives you a much larger business ecosystem and a huge alumni base, while Notre Dame tends to offer a smaller, more tightly connected undergraduate experience with especially strong alumni engagement in finance recruiting. For finance careers, that difference matters because recruiting often runs through relationships, student organizations, and how easy it is to get noticed early.
Notre Dame has a particularly strong reputation with employers in fields like investment banking, corporate finance, and consulting-adjacent roles, and its alumni network is known for being unusually responsive. For an undergraduate focused on high-finance recruiting, that can translate into a clearer path, especially if you are proactive and involved. The school’s size also means you may find it easier to build close relationships with professors, advisors, and older students who have already gone through recruiting.
UIUC is absolutely respected and can place well into finance, especially because of the strength and breadth of its business school, large employer presence, and sheer number of students in business-related pipelines. The advantage there is volume: more classes, more clubs, more peers aiming at many different finance paths, and a very broad alumni network across Chicago and beyond. The downside is that at a bigger public university, some opportunities can feel more self-directed and more competitive internally, so students often need to push harder to stand out.
If the question is which school tends to open the stronger undergraduate path specifically for finance recruiting, Notre Dame has the edge. UIUC is still a very solid option, especially if cost is meaningfully lower or you value the larger-campus business environment, but for pure finance career signaling and alumni-driven access, Notre Dame is likely the more advantageous choice.
