Is Williams harder to get into than Columbia for college admissions?

Columbia is typically perceived as harder to get into overall, but in practice both Columbia and Williams are extraordinarily selective, and the difference is not large enough to treat one as an easy alternative to the other. Columbia gets a much larger global applicant pool and has the Ivy name recognition that draws huge numbers of applicants, while Williams is a tiny liberal arts college with fewer seats and a very self-selecting pool. For a strong applicant, both should be viewed as reaches.

The more useful way to think about it is by applicant type. Columbia tends to attract a broader and more volume-heavy pool, including students applying because of New York City, its research-university setting, and Ivy prestige. That can make it feel tougher in the sense that the sheer scale and visibility create intense competition.

Williams can be just as difficult, but in a different way. Its applicant pool is smaller, yet often highly intentional: students who truly want a close-knit residential liberal arts environment, heavy faculty interaction, and strong undergraduate focus. Because Williams enrolls so few students, there is very little room, and applicants who are not a clear fit for that kind of campus can be at a disadvantage even if they look impressive on paper.

So if the question is pure overall admissions difficulty, most people would place Columbia slightly ahead in raw selectivity perception. But if the question is whether Williams is meaningfully easier to enter, the answer is no. They are both in the top tier of selectivity, and the bigger difference is the shape of the applicant pool and the kind of student each school is trying to build a class around.
