University of San Diego vs Pepperdine: which campus is more beautiful?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and campus vibe matters a lot to me. Both of these schools come up a lot when people talk about pretty campuses, but I can’t tell which one feels more impressive in person.
I’m mostly wondering which campus people think is more beautiful overall, especially in terms of views, architecture, and how it feels to walk around.

The biggest tradeoff is dramatic natural scenery versus a more cohesive, walkable campus feel. Pepperdine has the more jaw-dropping setting, with sweeping Pacific Ocean and Malibu hillside views that make it one of the most visually striking campuses in the country. University of San Diego is also beautiful, but its appeal comes more from elegant Spanish Renaissance architecture, manicured courtyards, and a polished hilltop layout overlooking the bay rather than nonstop ocean drama.
If you care most about views, Pepperdine usually leaves the stronger first impression. The campus sits above the ocean, and a lot of the experience is tied to open sky, water, and that classic Southern California coastline. It can feel almost resort-like in certain spots, especially at sunset.
USD tends to feel more architecturally unified and intentionally designed. Its white buildings, domes, arches, gardens, and plazas give it a very distinctive identity, and the campus often feels calmer and more contained. Walking around USD can feel more comfortable day to day because it is compact in a way that many students find easier to navigate and more consistently attractive from one area to the next.
Pepperdine is undeniably stunning, but it is also hillier and more spread out, so parts of the campus experience can feel less intimate and more car-oriented depending on where you are. USD’s beauty is less cinematic, but more cohesive.
So if the question is purely which campus is more beautiful overall, most people would probably give the edge to Pepperdine because the Malibu setting is hard to top. If you mean which campus feels more consistently charming and pleasant to live in every day, USD has a real case.
