Which is better for biology: University of San Diego or UC Davis?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intimacy. UC Davis offers a much larger biology ecosystem, with more course options, more lab groups, stronger connections to agriculture, ecology, animal science, and health-related research, and a campus built around the life sciences. University of San Diego gives you smaller classes, a more personal advising environment, and easier professor access, but it does not have the same breadth or research volume in biology.

For biology specifically, UC Davis is usually the stronger academic platform. It has multiple biology-adjacent strengths that matter for undergrads, including genetics, ecology, evolution, neuroscience, environmental biology, animal biology, and pre-health preparation. Because the university is large and research-intensive, students often have access to more specialized electives and more ways to explore subfields before deciding what they want to do.

Research access is one of the clearest differences. Davis has far more labs and a wider range of biological research happening on and around campus, which tends to matter a lot for biology majors, especially if you may want grad school, research experience, or a specialized science path. USD can still offer research, but the menu is narrower.

If your question is which school is more robust for biology as a major, UC Davis has the edge. USD becomes more compelling if you care a lot about smaller classes, a private-school feel, and a closer-knit undergraduate environment more than having the broadest biology opportunities.
