UCLA is the stronger overall choice for engineering. Its engineering school has a higher academic reputation, the UCLA name carries more weight nationally, and its Los Angeles location gives you access to a very dense network of aerospace, tech, biotech, and startup employers.

On academics, UCLA’s engineering programs are typically seen as more selective and more research-intensive, which matters if you want strong faculty access, advanced lab opportunities, or a path toward graduate school. Recruiters and graduate programs tend to recognize UCLA immediately, and that brand can help when your resume is being screened.

For internships, Los Angeles is a real advantage. UCLA students are close to major engineering employers in aerospace, defense, software, robotics, medical devices, and entertainment tech, and the school’s alumni network in Southern California is substantial. That makes it easier to find in-semester internships, not just summer ones.

ASU is still a legitimate engineering option, especially in areas tied to industry partnerships, entrepreneurship, and practical hands-on experience. It has strong connections in the Phoenix area, a large engineering student body, and a growing reputation in sectors like semiconductor-related work because of Arizona’s expanding manufacturing footprint.

The tradeoff is that ASU’s scale can feel less personal, and its overall engineering prestige is not on the same level as UCLA’s. For job prospects, both can lead to good outcomes, but UCLA tends to open more doors across regions and employers right away, while ASU may require a bit more self-advocacy to stand out.

Cost can still change the answer. If ASU is dramatically cheaper for you, that financial difference deserves serious weight, because graduating with far less debt can matter more than a reputation gap. But on the factors you named alone, UCLA comes out ahead.
